Join us in Buffalo, NY for the 2025 Northeast Quad Conference! Buffalo, in the early half of the twentieth century, was the country’s powerhouse of industry in steel production and grain milling. It attracted a diverse population and developed a rich culture, and came to house significant architectural landmarks from the likes of Louis Sullivan, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others. However, the era following the second World War brought economic challenges as manufacturing declined, leading to population loss and urban decay. Today, Buffalo is typically only associated with cold weather, football, chicken wings, and rust.
The coming era will be of Buffalo's resurgence. Buffalo today is filled with untapped knowledge, offering lessons in adaptive reuse, urban renewal, and what it means to design for a city post-decline. Investments in healthcare, education, and culture have brought new architectural wonders to Buffalo from the offices of OMA, Toshiko Mori, and others.
The message of RESURGE is simple: Decay breathes new life, and Buffalo's surge into the future will be stronger than ever before.
